Research and development project of a new generation of high-performance motorcycle starter motor

Requirements and Issues

Guangdong Daye Motorcycle Co., Ltd. has high requirements for the starting speed, reliability, and noise level of vehicles.
The existing supporting starter motors suffer from issues such as insufficient starting torque (especially in low temperature environments), relatively high starting noise, and a service life that does not meet design goals (some users have reported that the brushes wear out too quickly).

Solutions and Outcomes

In 2024, a brand-new starter motor has been developed to meet the performance, reliability, cost, and NVH requirements of new vehicle models.

Enhanced performance: starting torque increased by 20% (at -20°C), and starting time reduced by 15%

Enhanced reliability: The design life is ≥ 50,000 start-up cycles (with a target of reaching 80,000 cycles), significantly improving the wear issues of the brushes and commutator.

Optimize NVH: reduce startup noise by 5 dB(A)

Cost control: Keep costs within the target range while meeting performance requirements to maintain competitiveness

Lightweight: Achieve a 10% reduction in weight while ensuring strength

Compatibility: Meet the installation space, interface, and electrical system requirements (voltage, current) of new vehicle engine models
